Title: South West Branch 20th Birthday Conference

Our 20th Birthday Conference “Leading the South West to Carbon Neutral – Living and Working in a Green Future” was held in Bristol on Thursday 18 October. Sponsored by Colliers CRE, the conference looked at how as a region we can bring sustainability to the forefront and welcomed expert speakers on the issue of sustainable development.

Speakers included Sara Parkin OBE from Forum for the Future, Jill Rutter from DEFRA and Leslie Watson from Sustainability South West.

Our case studies were given by Will Ashworth, Managing Director of Fifteen Cornwall, who told delegates about their three pronged approach to sustainability; social, economic and environmental. These are achieved by providing work for local people and putting money into the local economy by using local suppliers and bringing tourists to the area. Sir Ferrers Vyvyan from Trelowarren talked about the use of biomass heating, which has created an award winning development on his 1000 year old estate.

Finally, Dan Green from Wessex Water, who is part of the Bristol Green Capital Momentum Group, told delegates about the Bristol Green Pledge and urged people to sign up.

The conference was held together very efficiently under the chairmanship of Mike Roberts from Vertigo Sustainable Development Consultants. He ended the day by asking delegates to challenge their company procurement policy and encouraging people to get active in the challenge ahead.
